Before-and-after photos: how to show progress honestly

Same light, same angle, same distance: simple rules for podiatry photos that can still be compared months later — and shown to the client.

Before-and-after photos: how to show progress honestly

A client rarely remembers what their nail looked like three months ago. A pair of good photos settles the question in a second: the treatment works, let's keep going. Bad photos — different light, a different angle, half the foot out of the frame — prove nothing. A few habits are enough to make your photos comparable.

Consent comes first

Photos of feet are still personal data. Get the client's consent to photo documentation before the first shot — and a separate permission if you would like to publish a photo on social media.

The same conditions every time

  • Light. Diffuse daylight or the same lamp. Avoid the flash: it flattens the relief and leaves glare on the nail plate.
  • Background. A plain light or dark towel or sheet — nothing that distracts from the foot.
  • Angles. Pick a few standard views — the toes from above, the sole, the problem nail close up — and repeat them at every visit.
  • Distance. Keep it constant: it is better to step closer than to zoom in. On many phones zoom is digital and loses detail.
  • Order. Shoot before the procedure and after it, and keep both sets in the same visit so the dates do not get mixed up.

Sharp shots

Wipe the lens — it collects fingerprints all day long. Tap the problem area on the screen to focus, and check the shot right away: a blurry photo is easy to retake while the client is still in the chair, and impossible a day later.

Keep photos with the client, not on the phone

Photos scattered across a personal gallery get lost, mix with family pictures and leave together with the phone. Store them in the client card next to the visit date — then the history is complete, and a colleague who sees the client next time has it too.

A collage for the client

The most convincing format is two to four shots side by side with their dates. In PodoCard all photos of a client are gathered into one gallery sorted by date: select two to four of them and you get a before-and-after collage. Every frame can be zoomed and moved, the date of the shot is printed under it, and the grid helps to line the frames up. The finished collage is saved as a JPG — to show the client or, with their permission, to post.
